My Recent DIY Projects

Happy Monday, readers! I hope this post finds you blessed & ready to face the week ahead.

We’re finally over our colds and I’m ready to get some posts up this week and next week.

I think I’ve entered into the ‘nesting’ phase of pregnancy because I’ve been purging, cleaning, and DIY-ing to my heart’s content!!

Here are some of my most recent DIY projects…

1. 2-Sided Throw Pillow – made from fabric scraps

My sweet husband got me a new sewing machine for Christmas this year and I’ve been itching to try something simple & easy. I’m a beginner sewer so I got some guidance from a good friend and made this really cute pillow! It was a gift for another friend and I was tempted to keep it =)

The fabric came from the remnant shelf at our local Wal-Mart. How cute is it?? I especially love the chevron side.

2. 3-Ingredient Cloth Diaper Washing Powder

This was super simple to make and I know it’s going to last FOREVER! I only need 1 Tbsp. per medium size load.

We cloth diaper Baby A and we use the gDiapers system. We’ve noticed in the past that the cloth inserts can get some build-up on them pretty quickly and I was stumped as to what was causing it. Then, a friend sent me a link to this post over at Elisa Loves that contained her recipe for gunk-free cloth diaper washing powder. Turns out the Fels Naptha Soap that I use in my 3-Ingredient Laundry Detergent can cause the build-up!

P.S. We’ve only noticed the build up on the cloth diapers so I will continue to use my liquid detergent recipe for our clothes…I still can’t get over the fact that it takes me about 30 minutes to make TEN GALLONS of detergent!

3. Homemade Lotion/Shaving Cream/Blemish Treatment

This might be my favorite because I’ve only recently started using Coconut Oil and well, I’m obsessed! I put a big dollop of it in my morning cup of tea everyday and I’ve been doing tons of research on how to use it in cooking, skin care, hair care, etc.

I mixed equal parts Organic Shea Butter & Organic Coconut Oil to make the body lotion…and it quickly dried up the dry, scaly patches on my arms AND on Baby A’s back. This was the only thing that has worked and it seems like we’ve tried everything! The lotion isn’t pretty. And I’m not a huge fan of the Shea Butter smell but I’m going to add a few drops of Lavender Essential Oil to the next batch to see if that helps.

I started shaving with straight Organic Coconut Oil in the shower and it’s amazing how moisturizing it can be. I don’t have to put lotion on after I shave anymore!

Using this recipe from Little House Living, I made a few tubes of blemish treatment. I tend to break out when I’m pregnant so these have been great. The Tea Tree Oil is very calming & soothing for the redness of the blemishes and the treatment smells great. I don’t use a lot on each blemish so it never feels too oily.

So tell me,

-What are your most favorite DIYs you’ve done recently?

-Do you DIY for the fun of it or to save money?
